What is Ductless Mini-Split?

A ductless ac unit, or mini-split, is a scalable and efficient way to add cooling (or heating) to specific rooms of your home. Also called ductless mini-split air conditioners and heaters, they are comprised of one or more wall, ceiling, or floor-mounted indoor cooling and heating units connected to an outdoor compressor. These alternative cooling and heating systems are easier to install than traditional HVAC systems and far more energy-efficient than a window unit or central HVAC unit. Many homeowners are discovering the benefits of supplementing their existing HVAC Systems with mini splits to better control the cooling and heating costs in high traffic areas of their homes. These systems have controls like a thermostat, and many models offer smart-home integration.

Is a Ductless Mini Split is suitable for your home?

Ductless AC systems are an excellent option if you want more control over cooling or heating certain rooms in your home. A central HVAC system has a thermostat, usually in a less conspicuous space like your hallway, that monitors and controls the temperature throughout your home. The problem is most homes have differing hot zones throughout the day. Traditional HVAC systems turn on when the thermostat senses the temperature is above or below the desired setting. Your HVAC system then works to cool or heat the entire home back to the desired setting. 

​With a supplemental mini split, you can better control the temperature in high traffic areas by setting the temperature for that room only, leaving the central HVAC system to maintain the rest of the house at minimum temperature. These ductless systems work well in homes with open concept living areas by cooling the parts of the home most in use during hours when temperatures are at their highest or lowest. Whereas a central HVAC units force air through your entire home, often cooling and heating rooms that aren’t in use.  ​

Because mini-splits don’t require costly ductwork, they are increasingly popular for retrofitting existing construction. In addition, central HVAC loses cooling and heating in the attic, where summertime temperatures can easily reach 150 degrees, making ductless air conditioning and heating units a more energy-efficient option. Another pro is flexibility in size. 

​The ductless system is comprised of two pieces, an outdoor compressor, and the wall, ceiling or floor mounted cooling unit. These units are connected by a refrigerant and drain line. The indoor portion of the unit varies in size based on the square footage it needs to cool or heat. Typically mounted higher on a wall as cool air tends to fall. Some mini splits can me mounted in the ceiling or floor, but both of these options require more invasive installation techniques.

​Why choose a mini split over a window unit?

​While ductless mini splits cost more upfront, they offer increased comfort compared to a window unit. Not only are ductless units much quieter, as they compressor is outside of the home, they are more energy efficient, and aesthetically pleasing; most window units turn off and on again consuming a great deal of energy when doing so, where a mini split has a variable speed motor that is never at a dead stop, it simply dials down to near zero once the desired temperature is reached. Also, a mini-split doesn’t affect the function of a rooms window or require an electrical outlet.
